It seemed like only yesterday since I was last in Madison. we arrived about 9.30pm on the Monday and made our way back to the hotel I had previously stayed in.
The plan was to spend almost a week in Madison, doing some flying, a bit of sight seeing before setting off to Rhode Island. I needed to be there by the following Monday night.
Tuesday had us at Morey Field to get checked out on the 172 RG, our plane for the trip. The airport looked amazing now that the new runway was in operation, the hangers built and looking almost complete. I was particularily looking forward to landing on the main runway as opposed to temporary strip, the taxiway.
The first flight that day had me doing general handling and just demonstrating to Rich that I could fly his plane. I was ready for him when he pulled the circuitbreaker on the undercarriage and we practiced putting the wheels down manually.
Matt was in the back but with no headset so it was a bit difficult to communicate. So after doing a few stalls we felt this tap on the shoulder and saw a very uncomfortable person looking sick.
We decided to call have a break then and landed. On finals to runway 10 my son could not believe that we used to land on the taxiway.
After lunch son decided to stay on the ground. It had become bumpy towards the end of the flight and he did not fancy it too much by then.
The afternoons flying was all about approaches. Rich had me do 4 before we had had enough and they went OK.
The following morning, Rich suggested we do another couple, just to be sure we had the full six needed (I had done a few in England with a safety pilot before going out to the US). Matt came with us on that and occupied his time take some pictures of Madison as we did another couple of approaches.
After that, it was logbook signed off and ready to go. Those two days had given us three and a half hours of flying, mostly under the hood, six approaches a bit of VOR tracking and a tasty little hold. We had also got to understand the plane, work out the GPS, the next thing was to check whether it would take our luggage for the trip to Providence.
On the Friday, I decided that I would take the plane off to Oshkosh to visit the EAA Museum. The Airventure show was due to take place the week we got back from Providence but I had no intention of flying into Oshkosh then. Click on the sidebar link for our Oshkosh trip.
The next day Saturday we got ourselves ready to leave for the first leg of the trip on Sunday, to Niagara Falls.
